How to choose an area
Pick the area by what you want to do each day, not by the name of the town alone. A stay "in Paphos" does not guarantee a short walk to the harbour. A stay "in Ayia Napa" does not guarantee a quiet night. This guide names areas, not hotels. Check current room prices, availability and reviews with the places you book through, since they change often.
The "best" pick below is an editorial choice by trip type, not a ranking. Traffic keeps left in Cyprus, and large rental companies are present in Larnaca and Paphos. Prices depend on vehicle, dates and extras.

Ayia Napa, Nissi and Protaras
This is the area for beach holidays. Nissi Beach is 600 m of sand with sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets and parking, and its tourist page lists music and beach events. If you want quiet nights, ask about noise before you book, because no hotel is quiet by default.
Protaras has Fig Tree Bay, a sandy beach with toilets, changing rooms, parking and a beach wheelchair. Konnos Bay lies between Cape Greco and Protaras. For Cape Greco, read the Ayia Napa and Cape Greco page first, as a fence has closed off a jump spot near the sea caves.
OSEA runs buses 101 and 102 between Ayia Napa and Paralimni via the resort area. The fares set in August 2025 are €2 for a daytime single, €3 for a night single and €6 for a day ticket. Check the current timetable before you rely on a bus.
Paphos
The harbour and Kato Pafos put you near the castle at the western end of the harbour and the Archaeological Park with its mosaics. The old town, with its market and workshops, is a different part of the visit. Look at a map before you book, as the two are not the same place.
Bus 610 links the harbour and the municipal market, and bus 611 links the Tombs of the Kings station, the harbour and Geroskipou Beach. Airport buses are 612 to the Tombs of the Kings station and 613 to Karavella. A single local fare is about €2.
Coral Bay is in Pegeia, a separate bay area with a sandy beach, toilets, showers and a nearby bus stop. See the Paphos guide for entry prices and hours.

Limassol
Limassol works for a mix of city and sea. Dasoudi lies on the tourist coast in the Germasogeia area, with a beach, a small wood and a footpath. The castle and the old harbour are a separate part of town, and the marina has its own shops and restaurants.
Amathous is 11 km east of the centre, and Kourion is 19 km west on the road to Paphos. Intercity buses connect Limassol with Larnaca (€5 single), Paphos (€5) and Nicosia (€6), adult fares since April 2025. See the Limassol guide for details.
Larnaca, Troodos villages and Kyrenia
Three different bases, each with a clear catch.
Larnaca
Finikoudes is a city beach with a palm promenade, cafés, restaurants and hotels. Mckenzie Beach is close to the airport. Lifeguards are listed from June to October. Bus lines 425, 429, 430 and 432 serve the airport, but check the current timetable. See Larnaca.
Troodos villages
Omodos is a wine village at about 800 m, 42 km from Limassol. Kakopetria lies in the Solea valley. Lefkara sits at the south-eastern edge of the mountains at about 650 m, 43 km from Larnaca. Winters are cold, as the January average low of 0.7 °C at Prodromos shows. See the Troodos.
Kyrenia (Girne) and Bellapais
Kyrenia is a harbour town. Bellapais is a mountain village south of it, so a stay there is not a beach location. Rules for crossing and rental car insurance apply. See north Cyprus.

Where to stay in Cyprus: frequently asked questions
Which area is best for a beach holiday?
Ayia Napa, Nissi and Protaras have several sandy beaches with facilities. Nissi Beach is 600 m long, and Fig Tree Bay in Protaras has parking and a beach wheelchair.
Where should I stay for the Paphos sights?
The harbour and Kato Pafos area is near the castle and the mosaic park. The old town is a different area, so check the map before you book.
Is Larnaca a good base?
It suits short stays and arrival days. The Finikoudes promenade has cafés and hotels, and several buses serve the airport.
