Kourion at a glance
Kourion is an archaeological site about 19 km west of Limassol, on the road to Paphos. The best-known feature is the ancient theatre. Around it you can see mosaics in several houses and the remains of an early Christian basilica.
The site is only partly accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. Kourion Beach and Aphrodite's Rock are separate places with their own conditions, and there is no joint ticket with them. Both are covered further down this page.

What to see at Kourion
Most visits are built around four things.
- The theatre. The ancient theatre is the best-known part of the site and the place to start.
- The House of Eustolios. A house with mosaic floors.
- The House of Achilles, also called the House of the Gladiators. More mosaics, in a second house.
- The early Christian basilica. The remains of an early church on the site.
The site is open-air. Take water and a hat in summer, because the longer summer hours (see below) run into the hottest part of the day.

Planning your visit
Three points that shape the day.
Choose your hours
In summer the site stays open until 19:30, which allows a late-afternoon visit when the heat eases. From 16 September it closes at 17:00, so start earlier in autumn and winter.
Walk it in order
Begin at the theatre, then move on to the mosaic houses and finish at the basilica. This is a suggestion, not a marked route.
Check access
Only parts of the site are accessible for wheelchair users. Ask at the entrance before you commit to a route.
Getting to Kourion
Kourion lies 19 km west of Limassol on the road to Paphos, so it fits easily into a day on the south coast. A rental car gives you the most freedom to combine it with other stops. Cars drive on the left in Cyprus. If you stay in the Limassol area, read our Limassol guide for the castle, the old harbour and the ruins of Amathous. From Paphos, see the Paphos guide for the mosaic park and the Tombs of the Kings.
Kourion Beach
Kourion Beach is a sand and pebble beach in Episkopi Bay with a marked swimming area. The tourism portal lists lifeguards from April to October. It is a different place from the archaeological site, so do not mix the two up when you read a map or a listing.
Lifeguard months are not a promise of a lifeguard every day. Follow warning signs and swim only in the designated areas, as the UK government travel advice also asks.
Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou)
Petra tou Romiou is a group of large rocks on the south-west coast, in the Paphos district. It is a separate place from Kourion, and there is no joint ticket for the two.
According to legend, Aphrodite was born from the sea foam here, and swimming around the rocks is said to bring back youth. Both stories are legends, not history and not medicine, and they are no reason to swim there. Heed warning signs and swim only in permitted areas.

Three places compared
Kourion, its beach and Aphrodite's Rock are all on the same stretch of coast, but they are three separate stops.
